Sucre - Who
we are
The
Instituto Cultural Boliviano-Alemán (ICBA) in Sucre
is a non-profit cultural institution dedicated originally to the promotion of
the German language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache - DaF) with the official
recognition as “Institut mit Prüfungsberechtigung “ (ImP - Institute licensed
for creditation) by the Goethe Institute, Munich. It puts emphasis on educational
activities and cultural interchange to promote and strengthen friendship and
understanding between the Bolivian and German people in particular, and
between different cultures in general.
The
ICBA develops its educational and cultural activities within the scope of the
Cultural Convention between the Republic
of Bolivia and the Federal
Republic of Germany, hence enjoys privileged treatment from the Bolivian
authorities.
Our work
We
offer a broad spectrum of activities like language courses (German – DaF,
Spanish, Quechua, Portuguese, Italian), cultural, educational and also ecological
activities. The Institute is considered one of the important centers of
cultural life in Sucre.
The Spanish Language Programme is directed above all towards tourists and
experts of international cooperation who want to learn Spanish in a
historical and colonial city, the constitutional Capital of Bolivia, declared
Cultural Heritage Centre by UNESCO in 1992.
Because
of its good infrastructure and beauty, the Institute is a part of the
architectural heritage of the Capital.

The house is the domicile of the Honorary
Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany, responsible for Sucre (Chuquisaca)
and Potosí.
In
the library/mediotheque of the Institute you can find current magazines and
newspapers like: Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, Geo, Natur, Humboldt, Correo del Sur,
National Geographic,...
The
Institute has also edited some books, like "Educación Ambiental Integral
para un Futuro Sostenible” by Gerd Mielke, Director of the Institute,
"Poesia y Naturaleza/Poesie und Natur", by Matilde Casazola, etc.
In
the last decade, the ICBA has converted itself gradually into a centre of
seminars and events for local, national and international institutions.
The
KulturCafé Berlin which is independently administered, offers a delicious
menu of an integrated German-Bolivian cuisine and cakes/pies. Every Friday
cultural events like “peñas foklóricas”, theatre shows etc. take place in the
café in close cooperation with the Institute.
Everyone
interested in ecological issues can visit our project “Ecomuseum” and take
part in its activities. Friday evenings are open for people interested in
ecology within the framework of the “viernes ecológico”.
You
can also stay in the guest-house, the "ICBA-Wasi" situated
in the same building as the Institute.
